One of my favorite local trees, this one was fractured a few years ago, probably by lightning, so that it carries a great scar down its trunk. Despite the damage, it grows still. Monochrome Trees Series.

The Shrieking Pit is one of several ponds near Overstrand, Norfolk, thought to be medieval sites of mining for iron ore, with strange local stories associated with them.
One story goes that a grieving young woman haunts the locality. She was seduced and abandoned by a duplicitous local farmer. She is said to have thrown herself into the pit one dark night before immediately regretting her decision and crying for help that did not come. Her unheard cries are said to be heard on each anniversary of her death. Another story tells of a horse and cart vanishing without trace in the pool’s murky depths. Looking at the black unreflecting water it seems perfectly possible.

This is a stunning site on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset. The bright sun and clear skies make this an other-worldly place, old, quiet and slowly crumbling into the sea with mystic rock strata and a place abounding in fossils. The rocky beach is hard to walk on and easy to slip over on the algae! We sit in the sun and watch the boats in the bay, and people exploring rocks and cliffs, and listen to the trickle and rumble of small rocks dropping from the cliffs behind us.

Above the village of Cadsden and near the Whiteleaf Cross Hill by Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, the woods cascade down the hillside. In the summer the light is mesmeric, filtering through the beach and yew trees. At every time of year, there are fallen leaves on the ground. Nothing seems to have changed since I played in the woods as a young child.
I painted this for my daughter who enjoys magic memories of these woods. The pleasure of painting in monochrome stimulated me to paint more in the same manner. This is the first of my Monochrome Tree Series.

On the Aire at Horsforth, near Leeds, West Yorkshire, there is an old weir and in 2020 a fish-run for the migrating salmon was being built in the river. The painting shows the steel piles used during the construction, but a lot has changed during the storms of early 2021 – the weir has broken under the pressure of the water in the narrowed river. More clever engineering will be needed.

A childhood memory from the family house off the Ngong Road, near Dagoretti Corner, Nairobi. In the rainy seasons the River Kirichwa Kubwa, normally a trickle, flooded into the gardens bringing mud and wildlife not normally seen. Admittedly, the floodwater was usually red-brown, not the grey-blue as I have it here.
